IPTV

What is IPTV?

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is a system that delivers digital television service over a network infrastructure using the Internet Protocol, typically via broadband connection. Unlike regular broadcast television, viewers receive IPTV content through the same technologies used for computer networks. For residential users, IPTV is often provided in conjunction with Video on Demand and may be bundled with other Internet services such as Web access and VoIP.

For commercial customers, IPTV, VoIP, and Internet access are often bundled in a service package referred to as a ‘Triple Play.’ Adding mobile voice service results in a bundled package known as a ‘Quadruple Play.’ In business settings, IPTV may be used to deliver television content over corporate LANs and business networks.

IPTV is typically supplied by a broadband operator using a closed network infrastructure. This closed-network approach competes against the delivery of TV content over the public Internet, which is called TV over Internet or Internet Television.
